Abstract
1,136,823. Production of alkali metal superoxides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Jan. 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 1936/66. Heading C1A. An alkali metal superoxide (excluding lithium) is produced by oxidizing an alkali metal/ bipyridyl interaction product with an oxidizing agent containing or capable of releasing available oxygen, and which is stable to the alkali metal superoxide formed. The oxide is formed as a yellow precipitate, having more available oxygen than an equivalent weight of alkali metal peroxide but less than an equivalent weight of alkali metal superoxide. The alkali metal/bipyridyl interaction product is obtained by interaction in a solvent, of an alkali metal and a bipyridyl. The solvent used is preferably liquid ammonia and an inert diluent (preferably as specified in Claims 13-19) of Specification 1,030,154), sodium being the preferred alkali metal, and the reaction carried out at less than - 30‹ C.
