Abstract
Vinyl compounds are polymerized or copolymerized in aqueous dispersion in the presence of (a) free or combined sulphur dioxide dissolved in the aqueous medium and oxidizable by free oxygen therein; (b) oxygen acting to oxidize the sulphur dioxide, and (c) a substance acting to catalyse the oxidation and thereby promote the polymerization. Vinyl compounds specified are methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl ethers, butadiene, styrene and its homologues and vinyl naphthalene and its homologues. The forms of free or combined sulphur dioxide may be those described in Specifications 582,134 and 582,327. The oxygen may be introduced into the dispersion indirectly, by way of a vapour space, e.g. using nitrogen containing 0.1 per cent of oxygen; or directly by the use of a preformed aqueous solution of oxygen or air, by nascent oxygen produced electrolytically, by chemical action between the free or combined sulphur dioxide and hydrogen peroxide, ethyl benzene peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or tetrahydro-naphthalene peroxide or a water-soluble salt of copper, manganese, iron or cobalt in the - ic state, which also possesses the property of catalysing the oxidation. This salt may be present as an impurity in any of the components of the dispersion. Emulsifying agents, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium soaps, or lauryl sulphate and protective colloids, e.g. gelatine, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, saponin or gum arabic may be present. The process is preferably conducted by adding the vinyl compound at a controlled rate to the rest of the components of the dispersion with stirring.
