Abstract

Copolymers are prepared from acrylonitrile and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. Polymerization is preferably effected by mixing the monomers in appropriate proportions, adding an aqueous solution of a polymerization initiator, and agitating the reaction mixture at a suitable temperature to produce the copolymer in the form of a flocculent precipitate. The copolymers may also be obtained by bulk or emulsion polymerization. Polymerization initiators specified are benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, azo bis-isobutyronitrile, potassium persulphate, sodium perborate, hydrogen peroxide and ammonium persulphate. Activators for the initiator may be employed, those specified being sodium metabisulphite, sodium bisulphite, sodium hyposulphite, sodium hydrosulphide, thioglycollic acid, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, cuprous chloride, silver nitrate and finely powdered copper, silver, iron and nickel. Copolymers containing at least 49 per cent acrylonitrile may be dissolved in nitromethane, p-cresol, formic acid or dimethyl sulpholane to form spinning solutions from which may be produced filaments which can be dyed with dyes of the kind used in dyeing regenerated cellulose or cellulose acetate.
