Abstract
Interpolymers are made from (1) a vinyl benzene or a vinyl halobenzene, for example styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene, ethylvinylbenzene, 2,5-dichlorostyrene and o-, m- and p-chlorostyrenes; (2) at least one alkyl ester of acrylic acid having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, at least 5 of the carbon atoms being in a single continuous chain, and optionally (3) an olefinic monomer interpolymerizable therewith, for example acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl or ethyl methacrylate and dimethyl or diethyl fumarate, the percentage of acrylic ester in the interpolymer being between (47 - 2n) and (68 - 2n) where n is the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous carbon chain in the alkyl group of the ester. Polymerization may be carried out in solution but is preferably effected in an aqueous medium containing a dispersing agent such as sodium lauryl sulphate, fatty acid soaps, ethylene oxide condensates with long-chain fatty acids, alcohols and mercaptans, alkali metal salts of vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymers and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Suitable polymerization catalysts are azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, cumene hydroperoxide, potassium persulphate and tert.-butyl permaleic acid; in examples tert.-butyl permaleic acid is used in conjunction with sulphur dioxide. During polymerization, further quantities of monomers, catalyst and emulsifier may be added as the reaction proceeds. Latices of the interpolymers may be used in the production of films.
