Abstract

Solvent-resistant polymers are produced by adding to an aqueous solution of an emulsifying agent 15 to 100 parts by weight of a butadiene (90-10%)-styrene (10-90%) copolymer in the form of a finished, i.e. "dead", latex, a catalyst, and 100 parts by weight of a mixture of butadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, and maintaining the resulting mixture at polymerization temperature until 90 to 100% of the added monomers has polymerized, the proportions of the monomers in the mixture being adjusted so that the resulting polymer contains between 10 and 40% of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, 10 and 60% of styrene and 30 and 80% of butadiene. Catalysts specified are alkali metal and ammonium persulphates, sodium perborate and hydrogen peroxide. Also present during polymerization may be a mercaptan modifier. The resulting graft polymers may be used in applications where solvent-resistance is required and also in the production of polymer dispersions in organic liquids as described in Specification 880,509.
