Abstract
Bipyridyls are produced by interacting pyridine or pyridine having one or more hydrocarbon groups as substituents and aluminium and oxidizing the interaction product so formed. The reaction between the pyridine and aluminium may be initiated, for example, by mercury and its compounds, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and halogens, and may be carried out in the presence of a diluent. The oxidation may be carried out by oxygen, an oxygen-containing gas, chlorine, hypochlorites, nitric acid or a water-soluble inorganic peroxy compound and is preferably carried out in the presence of a diluent, e.g. water, an alcohol or a hydrocarbon.
