Coal is introduced into hopper 50 through inlet shoot 8 as small material falling down the bottom of the shoot 8 and the larger material rolling down the upper edges thereof as shown. The material is thus guided towards level indicator 20 so that the indicator functions more accurately. The indicator is protected by shield 24.
