1,135,682. Bipyradylium compounds. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Oct., 1967 [7 Nov., 1966 (2)], Nos. 49800/66 and 49801/66. Heading C2C. N-alkyl diquaternary salts of 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridyls are prepared by heating a 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridyl for at least 3 minutes with an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing 2-5 carbon atoms substituted in the alpha position with a radical capable of conversion into a stable negative ion. The reaction may be carried out in the presence or absence of an inert diluent.
