Abstract

In a process for the preparation of pyridine and hydrocarbyl substituted pyridines by a dehydrogenation process by heating an amine or imine with iodine in the vapour phase at 300-800 DEG C., as claimed in Specification 1,098,725, molecular oxygen and a catalyst comprising a compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal are present. The latter may be present as solids on the support material or they may be in the molten form. Lithium and potassium compounds are preferred. Additionally a compound of silver and/or rare earth metals may be present in the catalyst, as may a transition metal such as iron.
