Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A temperature-responsive self-igniting railway points heater which is automatically reignited if extinguished by a passing train comprises for each rail 3 a row of burner heads 10 connected by a flash tube 11, at least one of the heads having a spark ignition device 14 automatically operated at regular time intervals not exceeding 30 seconds whenever fuel is being supplied. The device 14 is supplied with electric pulses from a battery-operated transistorised circuit, in a track-side cage 100, Fig. 1 (not shown) the circuit being controlled by a pressure switch in the gas supply, line. The gas supply itself is switched on and off by a valve controlled by a rail thermostat 2 and is fed to the burners through an air mixer 8. The flash tube 11 is connected by bleed tubes 16 to the gas/air supply tube 9. The gas is preferably propane, although butane or town gas may be used.
