Apparatus for detecting traces of combustible gas e.g. butane or propane, which may have leaked from a gas-fired boiler installation comprises a burner 15 fed with combustible gas similar to that fed to the boiler through a channel 5, and with air drawn from a ground location in the vicinity of the boiler through a channel 8 by the action of the flame on the burner 15, the flame being adjusted to be metastable so that it will be extinguished as soon as the combustible gas content of the air from the channel 8 reaches a predetermined limit, the loss of flame being detected by a thermostat bulb 25 acting on a cock 16 to cut off the supply to the burner 15 and to the boiler via channel 7. The burner 15 is surrounded by a grid screen in a casing 14 having an exhaust channel 10 for the burner. A high voltage generator 21 connected to an electrode 23 inside the grid screen is provided for supplying a spark to ignite the burner 15 where required. Air for the burner is drawn from the channel 8 via an opening 17 in the burner. The channel 8 is connected to a collector for air to be tested (not shown) this being in the form of a cylindrical member closed at one end, the open end being disposed at ground level and spaced from the supporting surface by three adjustable legs on the member. A grid screen is provided in the open end of the member.
