A tumbler wheelfor a combination lock comprises an annular hub 71 having a central opening 73 therethrough, adapted to be journalled on a support therefor in the combination lock and including an outwardly facing surface having a plurality of axially extending teeth disposed around the circumference thereof, an outer rim portion 77, surrounding said hub and being coaxial therewith in the locked condition of the wheel, said rim portion having an outwardly opening peripheral recess 78 therein defining a fence receiving gate and comprising a split ring, the end portions of which form a circumferentially movable lap joint and the inner periphery of which is toothed, a rotatable key change member comprising a cam member 82 rotatably supported in the end portions of the ring of said joint for receiving a combination change key and responsive to rotation thereof such that on rotation of the cam member in one direction, the end portions of the ring are relatively moved to constrict the ring and move the toothed surface thereof into interlocking relation with the hub teeth and on rotation of the cam member in the other direction, the ends of the ring are moved in the opposite direction to enlarge the ring and thus release said interlocking relation. In the construction shown, the lap joint between the end portions of the ring is formed by a bifurcated legs formation 80 at one end portion and a complemental tongue formation 81 at the other end portion which interfit; an opening is provided in each leg of the formation 80 and an opening is provided in the tongue 81 offset from the openings in each leg to rotatably receive the cam 82 which has a circular portion 82a located in each leg opening and a circular portion 82b located in the tongue opening, the portion 82b being eccentrically offset from the portion 82a. In a modification, the openings for the cam portions 82a or 82b can be of oval configuration with the longest axis extending radially of the wheel to allow the cam to turn. In a further modification the lap joint can be a simpler form with a single lap tongue on each end portion of the ring 77 in which event the cam 82 has two relatively eccentric disc portions.
