HANSIEORD C. STEVENS, OF JENKINS, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 36, 1913.
Application filed May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,208.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANSFORD C. S'rnvnNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jenkins, in the county of Letcher and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in combination locks, and has for its object, the provision of a simple inexpensive lock of the character specified, wherein a plurality of tumblers is arranged between the bolt and the rotating operating knob having means for engaging. and moving the bolt when moved toward the bolt, the knob also having means for engaging and turning the tumblers, to bring them into position to permit the passage of the engaging means of the knob.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the lock showing the dial; Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5 are sections on the lines l-1 and 5-5 of Fig. 2; Figs. 6 and 7 are sections on the lines 6-6 and 7-7 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a section on the lines 8-8 of Fig. 5; Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 4; and, Fig. 10 is a sectional view, showing a modified form of bolt.
In the present embodiment of the invention, an escutcheon 1 is provided, having a central opening 2, and a cup-shaped casing 3 is arranged over the opening, the casing having a flange 4 lapping on the edge of the opening and secured thereto by rivets 5. The casing has a central inwardly extending hub or boss 6, and a disk 11 having a knob 7 provided with a central stem 8, which extends into the hub, and is held in place by a radial pin 9 in the hub, which engages between the end of the stem and the head of a screw 10, threaded into a recess in the end of the stem. The disk may thus be rotated in the hub by means of the knob. A tumbler consisting of a portion 12 and a base or portion 13 is provided, the portion 12 of the tumbler having one of its edges received in the annular space between the outer edge of the disk and the edge of the opening, and having its other edge secured to the edge of the portion 13 of the tumbler. The said portion 13 encircles the hub and the tumbler is rotatable on the hub.
Screws 14 are provided for holding the portion 12 of the tumbler to the portion 13,
and a second tumbler 15 is seated on the innor face of the portion 13 of the first tumbler. The said tumbler 15 has an arc-shaped slot 16, and an annular series of openings 17, and a single opening 18, just outside the series 17. A pin 19 extending inwardly from the portion 13 engages the slot 16, to limit the angular movement of the tumbler 15, with respect to the portion 13.
The escutcheon 1 is provided with an arcshaped series 20 of indicating characters, numerals in the present instance, the said series being a semi-circle. The portion 12 of the first tumbler has the edge between the disk 11 and the escutcheon provided with a series of characters 21, also numerals. The outer edge of the disk is also provided with a series 22 of characters, letters however instead of numerals.
A coil spring 24 encircles the stem 8 and the hub 6, between the disk 11 and the tumbler 15. The spring acts to hold the disk and tumbler portion 13 in spaced relation, and the knob 7 may be depressed to approach the portion 13. The disk 11 is pro vided with a pair of lateral inwardly extending pins 25 and 25 each having its in ner end reduced, as shown in Fig. 3. The pin 25 is of greater length and nearer the center than the pin 25 The pin 25 is adapted to engage one of the openings 17 of tumbler 15, and the pin 25 the opening 18 of the said tumbler.
The bolt of the lock is in the form of a yoke or fork, comprising a body 27, and arms 28 and 28 The arms 28 and 28 embrace the hub 6, and the body 27 is provided with a reduced extension 29, passing through an opening or slot 30 in the casing 3. The shoulders formed by reducing the extension limit the outward movement of the bolt. Theportion 13 of the tumbler has openings 31 and 31 the former registering with an opening of series 17 and the latter with opening 18 of tumbler 15. The pin 25 will pass through an opening of series 17 when the knob is depressed, and the opening 31 of portion 13, and will engage the opening 32 of the arm 28 of the bolt. The pin 25 will engage and pass through opening 18 of tumbler 15, and opening 31 of the base 13, and will not touch the arm 28 of the bolt. A spring 33 is connected at one end to casing 3, as shown at 34, and the other end of the spring engages the arm 28 of the bolt, and the said spring acts normally to hold the bolt which is of approximately the same height as the knob when the knob is in normal posi tion. The rib thus acts as a shield to protect the knob and the indicating characters of the disk from injury.
The operation of the lock is as follows: For instance, to unlock with the combination A, 16 and 5, the disk is depressed until the pin 25 engages one of the openings 17 of the tumbler 15. Since the pin 25 is of greater length than the pin 25*, the said pin 25 will engage the tumbler 15 before the pin 25 engages any portion of the locking mechanism. The knob 7 is then turned to the right, and the tumbler 15 is turned in the same direction, until the pin 19 engages the end of the slot 16. As soon as this engagement between the pin 19 and the end of the slot 16 takes place, the tumbler 15 and the tumbler 12 turn together. The turning of the disk 7 to the right is continuous, the said disk carrying in its movement the tumblers 15 and 12 until the numeral 16 of the series 21 is in register or in radial alinement, with the numeral 5 of the series 20. The disk 7 is now turned to the left one point, that is, the distance between two numerals of the series 20. This movement of the disk to the left moves tumbler 15 in the same direction but does not move tumbler 12, since the pin 19 may move the length of the slot 16 of the tumbler 15, before the tumbler 15 would partake of the movement of the disk to the left. The above mentioned moving of the disk to the left, moves the tumbler 15 to the left just far'enough to bring the pin 19 to approximately the center of the slot 16. The tumbler 15 is now in such position that the opening 18,0f the said tumbler is directly above the opening 31 of the tumbler 13. That opening of series 17 which is diametrically opposite the opening 18 is also directly over the opening 31. The registering openings 1831" and 1731 are now in position to receive the pins 25 and 25 and after the knob 7 has been turned back the single point above mentioned, it is released, and the spring 2t moves the disk outward or away from the tumblers to its normal position. In this position, that is, in normal position, the disk does not engage any of the locking mechanism and may be turned freely in either direction without interfering with the said locking mechanism, that is, the tumblers 12 and 15 Nhile in normal position, the said knob 7 is turned in either direction to bring the numeral A in radial alinement with the numerals 16 and 5, thus bringing the pin 25directly over the registering openings 18 and 31 The disk is now depressed to cause the pin 25 to pass through the openings 18 and 31 and into the opening 32 or 4:6 as the case may be, of the bolt 27 or 37. The pin 25 passes through the opening 31 and that opening of series 17 which is in register therewith. The free end of the pin 25 bears against the upper face of the belt at a point diametrically opposite the engagement of the pin 25 with the opening 32 or 46, and acts to balance the bolt to prevent rocking thereof, while the knob 7 is turned to retract or withdraw the bolt.
In Fig. 10 is shown a modified form of bolt, adapted for chests, and for other forms of receptacles, wherein the lock and keeper move directly away from each other instead of laterally. The said bolt 37 is provided with a catch 38 at its outer end, and extends through a slot 39 in the casing 40. The slot is of greater length than the width of the bolt, so that the bolt may swing laterally. A spring a1 holds the bolt to one end of the slot, and the outer end of the bolt is beveled at 42, so that when engaged with a keeper, the bolt will be moved laterally against the resistance of the spring. The bolt is provided with a bearing 43, encircling the hub 6, corresponding to hub 6, and is held in a bearing 4:4: riveted to the casing at 45. The keeper is not shown, since it forms no part of the invention and may be of any usual or desired. construction. The bolt extends beyond the bearing 44 at the inner end, and is provided with an opening 46, for receiving the pin 25 of the disk, to operate the bolt. The casing is also provided with the lugs 47, corresponding to lugs or pins 35, for holding the tumblers in spaced relation. In operation, the disk is operated in precisely the same manner, and the pin 25 engages the opening 46 and swings the outer end of the bolt laterally, to release the catch, instead of moving the bolt longitudinally, as in the first mentioned embodiment.
