Abstract

1,134,957. Mixing apparatus: stirrers: magnetic drives. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 21 .March, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 13105/67. Heading B1C. A frame stirrer 12 in a vessel 13 of non- magnetisable material is driven through a magnetic coupling comprising a rotating magnet 16 and magnetised hub 11 (which may have a nylon casing). The stirrer is welded to a mounting plate 27 secured by a spring clip 39 under the head 37 of a post 33; the friction coupling so formed is designed to slip before the magnetic coupling as the viscosity .of the stirred material increases. Before the. coupling starts to slip the stirrer will have a simple rotary motion about the hub axis, and when the. coupling has been entirely overcome an orbiting motion about the same axis due to rotation about the pillar; in the intermediate stage it will have a motion compounded of both. In addition it may have a slight rocking motion caused by the convex underside of the hub, which. may also have peripheral fins (42, see Figs. 1, 4 and 5, not shown).
