Abstract

1,134,193. Continuous casting. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CENTRIFUGATION. 3 March, 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 9344/66. Heading B3F. A vertical continuous casting machine for producing solid or tubular castings comprises a rotatable mould 2 supported in means 14 and having driven withdrawal rollers 10a, 10b, 11a, 11b positioned beneath the mould the whole arrangement being carried in a structure 12 which is supported on upper and lower selfaligning bearings 14 and 13 respectively and which is rotatable about a vertical axis by a motor 20 and gearing 18, 19. Cooling means for the casting is located between the mould and withdrawal rollers. Guide rollers 23a, 23b are incorporated in the apparatus and rotate therewith. In order to effect positive withdrawal and guiding of the casting the withdrawal and guide rollers are counterbalanced, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), to maintain a uniform pressure on the casting and to counteract any centrifugal effects due to the rotation of the rollers about the axis of the casting. To prevent deviation of the casting from the vertical casting axis spring means is incorporated which is centrifugally balanced and effects a restoring action on the casting applied through the respective roller mountings should any tendency for deviation of the casting from its vertical axis occur. When continuously casting tubes in the machine described a mandrel is inserted into the mould as shown in Fig. 1.
