1,134,105. Vehicle wheels; adjusting suspension height. ELLIPTICAL DRIVES Ltd. 16 Nov., 1965 [20 Nov., 1964; 25 Jan., 1965; 10 Sept., 1965; 13 Oct., 1965], Nos. 47429/64, 46011/65, 38657/65 and 43513/65. Headings B7C and B7D. For improved driving adhesion over soft ground, a vehicle wheel is connected to a driving shaft via means for transferring the axis about which the wheel is driven from a position coincident with the wheel central axis to one eccentrically displaced thereto, the driven axis being locked in the required disposition. In one embodiment (Figs. 1-3, not shown) a circular plate rigidly attached to the driving shaft is rotatably disposed within a circular aperture in the wheel disc. In a modification (Fig. 4) the plate 29 is disposed between the wheel disc 32 and a flange 35, and is driven by a gear 23a secured to a hollow shaft 27. A spring- urged plunger 36 is retractible by fluid pressure for selective engagement in a central or eccentric hole 33 or 30. In a second embodiment (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) a plate (12) rigidly connected to a driving shaft is pivotable on the wheel disc. In a modification (not shown), the shaft is mounted in a block slidable in a diametric groove in the wheel disc. In a third embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown), a drive shaft (41) and a wheel carrying shaft (48) are interconnected by gearing (42), (43), (47) enclosed by a casing (45). The easing may be locked to the vehicle body in any one of a number of positions, and the drive shaft rotated to rotate the wheel about its axis. The casing may be freed from the vehicle body, the gearing locked together, and the drive shaft rotated so that the wheel is rotated about the drive shaft. The vehicle may be jacked by locking the casing to the body to give a maximum ground clearance, placing blocks under the axle casing and then rotating the casing to lift the wheel off the ground.
