Abstract

1363649 Electric motor wheels DUDLEY CONTROLS Ltd 24 Nov 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 40716/70 Heading B7H In an invalid carriage having a motorized wheel in which a wheel body is mounted on a carriage frame, a motor unit and a driving pinion connected thereto are mounted to be together displaceable to bring the pinion into and out of engagement with a driven gear connecnected to the wheel body. In a preferred embodiment the wheel body having a hollow hub 1 is rotatably mounted on an axle 6 fixed to a frame (not shown) of a wheel chair and the hub is closed by the circular plate 7 fixed to the axle 6. Two driving pinions 10 which are each driven by respective electric motor units 9 are engageable with an internally toothed gear 8 fixed to the interior of the hub 1. The units 9 and pinions 10 are mounted on respective plates 11 which are supported by pivot pins 12 on the plate 7. The plates 11 and thus the pinions 10 are urged into engagement with the gear 8 against the action of springs (not shown) by means of a cross piece 15 pivotally mounted on the plate 7 and turned by a manually or otherwise adjustable control arm 13. In a modification the ring 8 takes the form of a chain having transverse pins and fixed in an annular slot in the hub 1. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, only one drive device 9, 10 is provided and the plate 11 is bolted to an eccentric 21 which is mounted in a bore through the plate 7 so as to be turnable by the lever 13 for engagement and disengagement of the drive device 9, 10 with the ring 8. The plate 7 is fixed to the wheelchair body by way of a stub shaft 24 fixed to the plate 7.
