In a process for the continuous finishing treatment of webs of textile material, e.g. poplin, at temperatures below 100‹C, for example for bleaching, dyeing with vat dyes, subsequent press treatment or high quality finishing, such as creaseproofing or waterproofing involving heat treatment with the exclusion of atmospheric oxygen, the web is continuously impregnated with a treatment agent and is passed into a heat-treatment chamber which is filled with a uniform mixture of steam and an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, the proportions of the mixture being such that the particular saturation temperature of the partial pressure of the steam corresponds to the theoretical treatment temperature of the finishing process. A mixture of steam and inert gas is preferably supplied continuously to the heat-treatment chamber, the desired partial pressure of the steam being measured by controlling the content of the inert gas through measurement of the temperature of a wet-bulb thermometer in the vicinity of the point at which the web enters the chamber. A predetermined excess of the mixture of steam and inert gas may be conveyed in counterflow to the web of material over a heating zone at the end of the heat treatment chamber at which the impregnated web enters the chamber, the web being heated in the heating-up zone and the excess of the mixture of steam and inert gas leaving the heat-treatment chamber by way of a very narrow inlet slit so that the particular resistance to flow in the treatment chamber produces a slight excess pressure to prevent the uncontrolled ingress of air.
