Abstract

1,133,652. Printing-apparatus; selective printing; ink-ribbon mechanisms. SULMIST Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 9715/66. Headings B6C and B6F. An apparatus, suitable for printing identification numbers or prices &c. on bags, wrappers or labels which may be of cellulose, waxed paper, polythene, metal foil, or polypropylene, comprises a head 26 supporting a plurality of dies 30 and adapted to be lowered vertically against the bias of springs 24 on energization of a direct current solenoid 20, an inked tape 18 arranged to be passed between the dies and the bags or wrappers &c, on energization of a direct current solenoid 34, and control means, Fig. 3 (not shown), arranged so that the solenoid 34 is energized after the solenoid 20. The head 26 accommodates in a recess a maximum of seven of the dies 30 which are easily removable and manually selectable. The tape is passed from a magazine spool 14 to a take-up spool 16 and is indexed via a one-way clutch 42 and a ratchet and pawl mechanism 38. The tape is guided across the dies by guide bars 6. The head 26 is secured to the core of the solenoid 20 and may contain a heating element adapted to heat the tape prior to printing. The dies are held in contact with the tape for a variable time determined by the time constant of a circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown). The control switch (58) for the circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown) may be actuated manually or by the passage of an article. The switch may alternatively be actuated by the cam of an auxiliary packaging machine.
