[Also in Division B6] An apparatus for handling book borrowing transactions, e.g. in a library, comprises a platen 33, a tab applicator 34 mounted on a solenoid 53 and movable upwards against the platen when the solenoid is energized, and a supply of adhesively-coated imprintable tape 22 which is intermittently advanced between the platen and applicator; the applicator includes means 29 for severing the tape to form a tab and means, e.g. a carbonized ribbon 39, for imprinting and pressing the tab upwardly; a holder 20 on the applicator receives a borrower card and a date mechanism 19, and a book card is received in a tab-receiving position beneath the platen in the path of the upward movement of the applicator so that the imprinted tab is pressed against the book card, the insertion of the book card activating a switch for energizing the solenoid 35. The apparatus is portable and produces a book card with a tab containing relevent information regarding the borrower stuck to it (Fig. 1). On switching on, selecting the correct date at 19, inserting the borrower's card 21 and finally the book card 10, the book card operates a " card micro " switch which energizes the solenoid 35 and allows the applicator 34 to rise and imprint and sever tape 22 and adhere the tape thus formed to the book card (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). Through the circuitry illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown) a motor (44) is energized to feed more tape between the platen 33 and the applicator after each operation of the solenoid 35. A lamp (76) is included in the circuit to indicate that the apparatus is switched on. The lid of the apparatus is removable to allow ease of access to the interior to replace the tape or for maintenance.
