Apparatus for drying and cooling granular or powdery material comprises an inclined rotary drum 11 into which the material is fed at one end by a screw conveyer 31 for passage in countercurrent to hot gas introduced into the drying section of the drum which has lifter blades 61 by an insulated duct 43, which duct passes through a cooling section of the drum having lifter blades 63 into which cooling air is introduced through a stationary duct 39 and through which cooling air the material continues to pass in countercurrent for discharge through a shoot 41. The cooling air passes from the cooling section into the drying section for passage therealong to a discharge 33 mixed with the drying gas to utilize the absorbed waste heat.
