Abstract

A drying tunnel for through passage of trollies bearing material for m drying is of the type in which air is heated and conveyed from the load end to the discharge end of the tunnel via a pair of ducts, one on each side of the trolley passage, and counter-current to the intermittent progression of trollies. Before the discharge door is opened to remove a trolley the hot air ducts are blanked off near the discharge end and the air flow is, instead, redirected back into the trolley passage about half-way along the passage. Pref. the trolley advancing mechanism comprises two spaced, trolley pushing dogs, one behind the last trolley loaded and the other about half-way along the passage so that a trolley-sized gap can be left where the air is redirected during discharge door opening times; the redirection is pref. effected by adjustably inclinable louvre slats. The tunnel is used for drying fruit, esp. plums. An operator can open the discharge door safely to remove a trolley without switching off burners and fans.
