Abstract

1291974 Rotary kilns; drying particulate material F L SMIDTH & CO A/S 14 Jan 1970 [15 Jan 1969] 1846/70 Headings F4B and F4G A rotary kiln for roasting ores or drying particulate material comprises a shell 10 with refractory lining 18, a feed tube 41 entering an unlined upper portion 20 of the shell with which are associated preheating cylinders 24, a discharge pipe 57 extending from a stationary casing 53 receiving material from planetary cooling cylinders 47, and an axial heating tube 33 receiving hot furnace gases through a pipe 67 and discharging waste gases through radial branches 39 into a housing 30 surrounding the preheating cylinders 24. Feed tube 41 extendings through a fixed casing 42 and known labyrinth seals 45 and 55 are disposed between the kiln shell and this casing and also casing 53. A treatment gas, which may be admitted through pipe 58, passes over a guiding member 59, through ports 22 into the kiln and discharges through pipe 66. An additional furnace (44, Figs. 1 and 5) may open into housing 30. The guiding member 59 comprises a funnel shaped member 60 enclosing a cylindrical member 61 closed by end plates 63 and 64, the former being formed with openings receiving delivery conduits 51 from the cooling cylinders 47. Guiding member 59 shields the cooled material from the extension 62 of the heating tube 33 as said material passes to discharge pipes 57. Cylinders 47 may be additionally cooled by power driven fans or by water sprays. Expansion bellows 29, 46 and 68, and 71 are provided respectively on the preheating cylinders 24, the heating tube 33 and the cooling cylinder 47. The particulate material may include oxide or sulphide ores of Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cd, Cu and A2 or sulphide ores of Pb and Sn.
