Abstract

1,133,337. Cellular compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 27491/65. Headings C3C, C3E, C3P and C3Q. Cellular compositions are obtained by blending dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine with either a guanidine, one or more hydrogen atoms of which have been replaced by an electronegative group, or a salt of an optionally substituted guanidine with an acid, and a natural or synthetic rubber, polyolefin or a polymer of vinyl chloride and heating the mixture to generate nitrogen. Suitable synthetic rubbers include hydrocarbon polymers, e.g. polymers of butadiene and isoprene and copolymers of these with olefins, polymers of 1-chlorobutadiene and copolymers of diolefins with, e.g. acrylonitrile and mixtures of such polymers and copolymers. The most suitable polyolefin is low density polyethylene. The amount of guanidine or guanidine salt which may be used is between 0À1 and 10À0% of the weight of rubber, polyolefin or polyvinyl chloride. Activators, such as urea, phthalic anhydride, 4-benzylphthalic anhydride, salicylic acid, maleic anhydride or stearic acid may also be incorporated in the blend as may conventional additives, e.g. pigments, antioxidants, anti-adhesive agents, plasticizers and dispersing aids.
