Abstract

An actuating device for welding apparatus comprises fluid operated piston means adapted to be connected to a welding electrode, the piston means being insulated from its cylinder by a metallic oxide layer. An actuating device for a welding tongs body or cylindrical body 6 earthed at m comprises a cylinder 12 whose walls are formed by metal bushes 4, 4a separated by partitions 3. A piston rod 1 slidable in the cylinder has mounted thereon two pistons 2, 2a on opposite sides of the partitions 3, the left hand end of the rod having a bore 16 to receive a stud 15 on an electrode holder 7 carrying a welding cable 11 and the right hand end having a bore 17. The left hand end of the rod is slidably arranged in a synthetic resin bush 5, that part of the rod in the bush and the base having co-operating wide flats. An inlet 21 for air or oil operating fluid is open to the piston 2a and via the bore 17 to the space between the piston 2 and a partition 3 and another inlet 19 is open to the other side of the piston 2a. O- rings 25 are provided in recesses in pistons 2, 2a and partitions 3. To insulate the holder 7, the pistons 2, 2a and partitions 3 are provided on their contacting or entire surfaces with a metallic oxide layer. The pistons and partitions may be of aluminium and the layer aluminium oxide deposited anodically.
