A filter press comprises rails (3), which slidably support filter plates 4, and rails 10 which carry a wheeled trolley comprising two side plates 11 between which the plate spreading and cake removal mechanisms are mounted. Each plate 11 has two carriages 15, 16, travelling in horizontal slideways 13, 14 and having retractable fingers 17-20 which engage successive plates 4 so that they are moved apart as carriages 15, 16 separate. The cake on a newly exposed plate is engaged and held by suction applied to cups 24 on a vertically movable support 23 as the plate is moved away (Fig. 3, not shown). As illustrated, the support is lowered and pivoted through 90 degrees, after which compressed air is supplied to the cups and the cake drops on to a pallet 28 on the trolley base. Alternatively, the support moves only in its own vertical plane and released cake falls on to a conveyor belt. Carriages 15, 16 on each plate are geared together and the carriages on respective plates are resiliently coupled to move together. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates the operating cycle of carriages and fingers whereby separated filter plates are brought together, sandwiching support 23, then separated to withdraw cake from one of them which is finally brought 'back again to transfer it to the 'emptied' side on the next cycle. A central cylindrical cutter 26 separates and retains the central section of each filter cake. The various movements of fingers, carriages and support 23 are effected by electrically controlled jacks and controlled by a single programme control device.
