Abstract
1,131,559. Bottling. HOLSTEIN & KAPPERT MASCHINENFABRIK " PHOENIX " G.m.b.H. 24 May, 1967 [24 June, 1966], No. 24135/67. Addition to 1,078,708. Heading B8T. In a counterpressure filling machine, excess liquid which has entered the gas return pipe after the bottle &c. has been filled is discharged to waste after removal of the filled bottle &c. instead of being supplied to a succeeding bottle or a separate liquid reservoir. The filling head comprises a valve block 1 with a liquid valve 2, a shifting valve 3, a gas valve 29 and a return gas valve 4. A filling pipe 5 contains a return gas tube 6, which may be connected by the bore 7 and the valve 4 to a riser pipe 8 situated inside the container 9 which holds the gas and liquid, e.g. beer, with which a vessel 14 is to be filled. Initially, an empty vessel 14 is placed in position with the expansion valve 3 closed, and the gas valve 29 is opened to allow gas to flow into the vessel 14 under pressure. The valve 29 is then closed, and the liquid valve 2 opens to admit liquid into the filling pipe 5. At the same time, the return gas valve 4 is opened and retained by the pawl 27 allowing displaced gas to flow up the tube 6 and into the container 9. When the liquid in the vessel 14 covers the orifice 10, the level of the liquid rises up inside the gas return tube 6. The valves 2 and 4 are now closed, and the shifting valve 3 actuated so that the shaft 21 moves to a position wherein the top of the vessel 14 is connected via the ring passage 13 and the bore 12 to the exterior at the opening 15, hence allowing relief of the pressure in the vessel 14. As the shaft 21 moves further, it causes the valve shaft 22 to move also, connecting the upper end of the filling pipe 5 with the exterior, thus allowing the liquid in the pipe 5 to fall into the vessel 14 which is then removed. The liquid in the return gas pipe 6 is retained up to this point, but the valve 4 is now opened briefly so that the liquid is expelled by gas pressure prior to the arrival of another vessel for filling. Vessels are held in position by the member 16 which is suspended from the valve block 1 by a gripper 17.
