Abstract

1,131,541. Producing neutrons. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 7 April, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 15647/66. Heading G6P. In a chopper-type neutron spectrometer, the rotor is spun about a vertical axis by an electric motor from which it is supported on a flexible shaft. The chopper rotor has a spindle on its lower side which extends loosely into an oil-damped bearing. To prevent damage to the device in the event of fracture of the flexible shaft, horizontal bearings are provided above and below the rotor. Upon failure of the shaft, the rotor falls and is supported, while still rotating, on the horizontal bearings. Torsion of the flexible shaft is measured by pulses produced by a photo-electric device and magnetic transducers at the lower and upper ends of the shaft respectively. Speed adjustment is effected by control of the frequency of the supply to the motor stator windings. The stator windings are water-cooled and the motor rotor cooled by oil flowing through the shaft. The chopper rotor is housed in a vacuumtight chamber provided with neutron windows and steel and lead shield rings round the inner periphery.
