Abstract
869,647. Nuclear reactor control rods. HAWKER SIDDELEY NUCLEAR POWER CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 11, 1958], No. 36195/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor is provided with a control rod movable upwardly and downwardly, projections carried by and extending laterally from the control rod and movable about the axis of travel of the control rod, and for each projection a support forming part of or secured to the fixed reactor structure, a fixed first profile to guide the projection during upward travel to a position for lowering on to the support, and a second fixed profile to guide the projection during upward travel to a position for lowering past the support. The control rod 1 shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a pair of lugs. 2 projecting from diametrically opposed points of a spindle 4 set in hardened conical bearings 5 set in the control rod. The bearings prevent rotation of the spindle from exerting any appreciable torque on the rod and the use of a tape 13 for suspending the rod increases its resistance to rotation: Above the normal operating position of the rod is fixed a collar (not shown) provided with two profiled passages as shown in Fig. 3 for the passage of the lugs 2. As the control rod is raised each lug will pass through its associated passage until it encounters a profile 7 which guides it to the position A; if the rod is then lowered the profile 8 guides the lug to a position B where the rod is securely supported by the lugs and the suspension mechanism may be detached for inspection or maintenance. If the rod is raised from this position each lug is guided by a profile 10 to a position D from which it can be lowered back through the passage or raised to position C where it is free for further upward travel.
