Abstract

The invention comprises a 4-chloro-steroid of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or a lower alkyl group, Q represents an oxo group or a 1,2-alkylenedioxy group and M represents a structure of the formula wherein R<SP>2</SP> represent a hydrogen or fluorine atom, R<SP>3</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, lower alkanoyloxy or lower alkyl group, R<SP>4</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> each represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkanoyl group, R<SP>6</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or ethynyl group, R<SP>7</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R<SP>8</SP> represents a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, R<SP>10</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or an α-hydroxy or lower alkyl group and R<SP>11</SP> represents a hydroxy group or R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> together represent a grouping of the formula Y represents a methylene, #-hydroxy-methylene, α-hydroxy-methylene or carbonyl group and Z represents a methylene, #-hydroxymethylene, α-hydroxymethylene or carbonyl group or, where R<SP>8</SP> represents a chlorine atom, a #-chloro-methylene group (Z being an α- hydroxy-methylene or methylene group only when R<SP>8</SP> represents a hydrogen atom) and wherein a double bond may be present in 1,2- position and a process for the preparation of 4-chloro-steroids of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and Q are as defined above and M represents the remainder of the A and B rings as well as the C and D rings of the steroid molecule by treating a steroid of the general formula with chlorine either in the presence of a proton acceptor or followed by the addition of a proton acceptor, and if desired converting the 3-oxo group in the product into a 1,2-alkylenedioxy group. Subsequently any free hydroxy groups in the 4-chloro steroid product may be esterified, and dehydrogenation may be effected in 1,2- position. Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions containing the above novel compounds and having progestational, anti-inflammatory or thymolytic activity are administered orally, parenterally or topically.
