Abstract

1,130,868. α - Methyl - α - cyano - # - (alkoxyphenyl) - propionic acid esters and conversion to acids. MERCK & CO. Inc. 19 Oct. 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 6920/68. Divided out of 1,130,867. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula wherein R is a C 1-5 alkyl radical and R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-5 alkyl radical are prepared by reacting a C 1-5 alkoxylated benzyl halide and a C 1-5 alkyl ester of α-cyano propionic acid. The novel compounds are converted to diesters of formula where R<SP>11</SP> is C 1-5 alkyl identical to R<SP>1</SP> by action of a strong mineral acid and R<SP>11</SP>OH, and then to mono esters R<SP>11</SP>=H by partial hydrolysis with NaOH. 4 - Methoxybenzylchloride is prepared by action of HC1 and paraformaldehyde on methoxybenzene.
