Abstract
1,127,868. Esters of substituted 2-benzyl-2- cyanopropionic acids. MERCK & CO. Inc. 19 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 46802/66. Heading C2C. The racemic form of a compound of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H or C 1-4 alkyl, R 3 is C 1-8 alkyl and n is 0 or 1, is obtained by resolving the corresponding acid (R 3 =H), recovering the D and L forms separately as the esters, contacting the D-ester with an aqueous solution of a strong acid to form the corresponding D-2-carbamyl ester, racemizing the latter and dehydrating the product.
