Abstract
1,130,869. α - Methyl - α - carboalkoxy- #-phenyl-propionic acid derivatives. MERCK & CO. Inc. 19 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No.6921/68. Divided out of 1,130,867. Heading C2C. A method for resolving racemic mixtures of α - methyl - α - carbo - (C 1-5 ) - alkoxy -# - [mono- (C 1-5 alkoxy)-phenyl]-propionic acids comprises (a) forming a solution of the racemic mixture in a polar solvent, (b) supersaturating said racemic solution, (c) simultaneously or successively contacting said solution with one onantiomorph in crystalline form whereby a portion of said enantiomorph separates from the supersaturated solution in crystalline form, leaving the mother liquor still supersaturated in the second enantiomorph, (d) separating the desired enantiomorph, (e) optionally esterifying the unwanted enantiomorph to produce the corresponding diester in which both ester groups are identical, partially hydrolysing the diester to produce an above racemic mixture to recycle to step (a), (f) optionally converting the acid enantiomorph to its acid halide, and (g) optionally reacting the acid halide with an alkali metal azide to produce a compound of formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-5 alkyl.
