Abstract

1,130,448. Coiling wire. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 21046/66. Heading B3E. [Also in Division H1] Insulated electrical conductor 30 (suitably of enamelled copper wire) is formed into turns on rotating mandrel 22 and forced off the mandrel into the space between rotating tubes 10, 11 by stationary guide 38, so that they progressively fill the space and make up a coil which is secured by casting an epoxy resin, or other liquid which sets or cures to form a, bonding means, with or without an inorganic filler, in the space between the tubes so that the coil and resin form a voidless assembly. The diameter of the turns formed on the mandrel is the arithmetic mean of the inner and outer diameters of the annular space between the tubes 10 and 11. Tubes 10 and 11 may be of stainless steel, coated with a mould-releasant such as silicone grease, or be of other material suitable for moulds to be removed after the bonding means is solid. Alternatively they may be of insulating material, such as pressboard or a laminated plastics material, and be a permanent part of the coil assembly. Optionally tubes 10 and 11 may be replaced by frustum-shaped insulating members between which there is an upwardstapering annular space. These may be applied to the cured coil, prepared in a mould whose annular diameters change progressively from its base to its head, with a constant arithmetic mean which is the diameter of the turns, or themselves be used as catcher tubes. The coil which results has a progressively decreasing number of turns upwards from its base to its last-formed upper part.
