Abstract

1,079,815. Making electric coils. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 25, 1965 [Feb. 3, 1964], No. 3098/65. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] Electrical coils, e.g. field coils for D.C. motors, coils for shaded pole induction motors or for transformers, are made by forming a winding from conductor wire having a circular crosssection of diameter Do with an insulating layer of synthetic resin of radial thickness ho, the ratio Do/ho being not less than 18, and compressing at least a portion of the winding at a pressure between 10,000 and 40,000 p.s.i. to deform the conductor wire from said circular cross-section to a multi-sided cross-section. As described, a cylindrical coil 10 is placed in a ring-mould 12 having a central mandrel 13, a rubber ring 14 is placed over the coil 10; the coil leads 18, 19 passing through apertures 20, 21 in the ring; an annular plunger 15 is placed on the ring and the assembly is compressed between the platens 25, 26 of an hydraulic press. After compression there are no voids present in the coil and the conductors have a multi-sided cross-section, e.g. hexagonal cross.section if the coil is a uniformly wound coil. The conductor wires may be aluminium or copper and the synthetic resin may be a polyvinyl formal reacted with cresol formaldehyde, a terephthalic polyester resin, a polyurethane, nylon, aromatic polycarboxylic imide, polyvinyl butaryl or a phenol-aldehyde resin.
