Abstract

1,130,399. Centrifugal separators. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORP. 14 March, 1967 [17 March, 1966], No. 11833/67. Heading B2P. In a centrifuge for separating a viscous liquid component from a liquid mixture, wherein the component accumulates in an annular pocket 32 on top of the centrifuge bowl 12 and is discharged therefrom by means of a stationary skimmer 38-52, accidental discharge of the viscous component direct from the pocket 32 to the outside of the bowl via the annular passage between the bowl drive shaft 14 and the skimmer 38-52, is prevented by means of an axially extending baffle 74 on the skimmer which projects into an annular groove 72 in the bowl or as shown, in a member 66 associated therewith, and which deflects any of the viscous component, which would otherwise be discharged directly, downwardly into the groove 72 and against adjacent radial vanes 68 which throw the viscous component back into the pocket 32. The member 66 is screwed to a vaned centre tube 16a rotating bodily with the bowl 12 and carrying frustoconical discs 16 and serves also to deflect diluent, e.g. hot water, supplied through a nozzle 64-64a, into the pocket 32 to facilitate discharge of the viscous component. As shown, the viscous component is constituted by the light liquid component while the separated heavy liquid component passes from the interior of the bowl into a pocket 26 from which it is discharged by means of a skimmer 36. The skimmers are provided with annular ribs 60, 62, 60<SP>1</SP>, 62<SP>1</SP> which serve to deflect back into the respective pockets any liquid flowing inwardly past the skimmers. Rotation of the liquid in the pockets 26, 32 is insured by vanes 28, 30a, 34. A shield 63 on the underside of skimmer 36 serves to control turbulence. A number of concentric baffle-groove arrangements similar to 74-72, may be provided. The viscous component may be constituted by the heavy liquid component in which case the arrangement 74-72 would be applied to the pocket 26.
