Abstract

Slurry (e.g. paper stock) enters at 14, flows in a volute path into a chamber 15 surrounding concentric cylindrical screens 16, 20, flows in parallel inwardly through these screens into a trough 17 and out through a main outlet 27. One or more outlets (e.g. 31, 29, 24) are provided for the reject fraction. The screens are kept from clogging by rotating foils 35, 37 positioned adjacent their respective outer surfaces. As described, the densest reject fraction is collected in a trough 28 by virtue of the centrifugal force created by the tangential inlet flow. An intermediate reject fraction collects by gravity in a trough 30. The lightest reject fraction together with untreated slurry floats over the weir constituted by screen 16 and enters annular space 25, reject leaving at 33, slurry passing through screen 20. Collection trough 17 may be partitioned (100, Fig. 3, not shown) to collect accept from the two screens separately these screens may have different porosities. Each screen 16, 20 is supported by a grid 16a, 20a and backed by an impervious wall 16b, 20b, respectively. Dilution water may be introduced into chambers 15, 25 (Fig. 2, not shown). The foils 35, 37, which are circumferentially elongate in plan section, and may be connected by a ring 73, are rotated by a hub 64 mounted on a central shaft 50 driven by V-belts 90.
