Abstract

779,796. Filtering liquids. SUNDS VERKSTADER AKTIEBOLAG. March 1, 1955 [March 3, 1954], No. 6066/55. Class 46. Paper pulp &c. suspended in water is treated to separate the small and/or the large particles from the suspension or to divide the suspension into fractions according to the size of the particles by supplying it to a preferably closed cylindrical container through which it flows in an outward direction from the centre through spaced concentric screens, the spaces between the screens and between the outermost screen and the wall of the container housing vanes adapted to be rotated along the screens to whirl the suspension, sufficiently treated material being removed from the container and that insufficiently treated being returned to within an earlier screen for re-cycling. A cylindrical container 1 having a tight fitting lid 2 to permit working under vacuum is kept filled with material to be treated. A rotary shaft 9 projects upwards through the tapering stepped bottom of the container and carries at its upper end a series of spokes 18 .. 21 supporting respectively vanes 22 . . 25. These vanes dip into the spaces between stationary, concentric, perforated screens 14 .. 17 and a space between the outermost screen 14 and the wall of the container 1. The screens make fluid-tight connections with stepped bottom of the container and their tops are closed by discs 10 . . 13. The spaces outside the screens 14 . . 17 have outlets 26 . . 29 in their bases and these outlets communicate respectively with inlets 30 .. 33 in the spaces within the screens 14 . . 17 to recycle the suspension. Difference of pressure to effect the re-cycle is derived from the greater peripheral velocities at the outer screens. Suspension is introduced at A, that with large particles is withdrawn through B and that with small ones, e.g. roll fibres, through C, A being selected to be between B and C in a radial direction. The discharge from C is of high concentration and that from A, low. The screens may be rotated or vibrated and be axially displaced one from another.
