Abstract
1432921 Sludge centrifuge PENNWALT CORP 14 Jan 1974 [17 Jan 1973] 01586/74 Heading B2P A centrifuge comprises a top-driven bowl 12 having an internal disc stack (32), Fig. 1 (not shown), and peripheral nozzles 34; a housing 14 surrounding the bowl and provided at its bottom with a sump 49 which receives heavy phase material, e.g. sludge, discharged from the nozzles and flowing downwardly along the inner portion of the housing; a feed pipe 38 extending upwardly through the housing for delivering feed to the bowl through an inlet 42 at its bottom; a tubular riser 66 extending upwardly from the sump 49 about the feed pipe 38 and having a rim portion defining with the feed pipe an annular well 68 in which heavy phase material from the sump collects; and an impeller 58, 80 carried by, and rotating with, the bowl and extending into the well 68 to contact heavy phase material and propel it into a separate inlet 44 at the bottom of the bowl so as to recycle heavy phase material through the bowl. The bowl 12 is connected to a driving shaft 16 by a hub 18 which is provided with passageways 42 forming the feed inlet to the bowl. A conical nut 40 deflects the feed issuing from the pipe 38 towards the passageways 42, the feed being accelerated by vanes 56 carried by a feed cone portion 54 of the bowl. A bottom plate portion 60 of the bowl carries accelerator vanes 58 having extensions 80 forming the recycled heavy phase material impeller. A circular member 74 supported on the riser 66 carries a wind screen 36 as well as an annular bumper 76 which cooperates with a flange 78 on the plate portion 60 to limit excessive deflection of the bowl as it vibrates during acceleration to normal speed. Non-recycled heavy phase material is discharged from the housing through an outlet 50. One or more separated liquid phases are discharged via overflow passages, e.g. (26) Fig. 1 (not shown), at the top of the bowl.
