Abstract

1,130,379. Joint-making packing. G. ARLT. 12 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 36221/66. Headings F2B and F2G. A packing ring 4 of elastic material for a spigot and socket pipe joint has a peripheral bulge 5 on its inner wall and at least one recess 7 extending axially from the socket mouth end of the packing and terminating at least substantially radially in alignment with the greatest radial extent of the bulge 5; the packing is formed in situ by inserting a former in the socket, pouring liquid material between the inner wall of the socket and the former, allowing the material to set and withdrawing the former and may be of polyurethane plastics. The packing sealingly contacts the inner wall 1 and base 2 of a socket 3 of a pipe 9 and, in use, the bulge 7 elastically engages the spigot of the other pipe (not shown) forming the joint. The recesses 7 are separated by solid webs 8. In a modification, (Fig. 2), an annular recess (7<SP>1</SP>) is provided between the inner and outer walls of the packing. Alternatively the annular recess may be formed in the outer wall.
