Abstract

1,129,812. Contact printing apparatus. HARRISON & SONS Ltd. Sept. 27, 1965 [Sept. 30, 1964], No.39856/64. Heading G2A. [Also in Divisions B2, B3, B4 and C7] A method of making a perforating tool comprises removing metal from the surface of a tool blank, by a process such as etching, engraving, or spark erosion, to form projections and grinding the projections to form sharp perforation-defining edges. The tool may be a flat plate or a roll and is for use in a machine for perforating or forming an intaglio effect on sheet material such as paper in which material in contact with the projections is perforated by rubbing contact, e.g. of a cylinder of cutting knives rotating at high speed, with the other surface of the material. In the forming of pins, for perforating sheets of stamps, on a roll 4 the roll is cleaned and prepared for electrolytic etching. Photosensitive resist is distributed over the roll whilst it is rotated by means of a nozzle and brush. Alternatively the roll is coated by spraying, ring coating or whirling. After the resist has been hardened the roll covered with a negative 32 of the required pattern of projections is rotated once in front of a slit 33 through which light passes from arc lamps 31.
