Abstract

112,973. Imperial Trust for the Encouragement of Scientific & Industrial Research, Glazebrook, R. T., Rosenhain, W., and Rodd, E. H. J'an. 29, 1917. Zirconium oxide, oxychloride, and basic sulphate.-Basic zirconium sulphate is obtained by the addition of an alkali such as ammonia or caustic soda to an acid solution containing zirconium sulphate, and preferably hydrochloric acid until a permanent precipitate begins to form, and then allowing precipitation to continue by itself. The sulphate solution may be made by heating together crude zirconia, tiuorspar, and sulphuric acid, adding water, separating thecalcium sulphate, and adding some hydrochloric acid. The basic sulphate can be converted into oxide by ignition or into hydroxide by suspending in water and agitating with ammonia. The basic sulphate may be made in purer condition by dissolving zirconium hydroxide in hydrochloric acid, concentrating, and crystallizing, a mixture of a new basic oxychloride Zr5O8Cl422H2O with the known oxychloride ZrO2Cl28H2O being obtained. The new oxychloride is separated by recrystallization from hydrochloric acid, and is dissolved in water and treated with sulphuric acid or a solution of a sulphate equivalent to the contained chlorine, the rew basic sulphate 5ZrO22SO314H2O being precipitated. The hydrochloric acid mother-liquor contains zirconium which may be precipitated as a basic sulphate free from iron by addition of sulphuric acid.
