Abstract

115,846. Clevenger, G. H. May 7, 1917, [Convention date]. Zinc sulphate.-A zinc-sulphate solution obtained from ores or the like is purified from cobalt by means of a halogen-free oxidizing-agent such as a manganate, permanganate, or lead peroxide, or a mixture in the presence of a manganese salt in the proportion of at least five parts of manganese to one of cobalt. Manganese salt, if not already present in this proportion, is added to the solution to be purified, and must be completely precipitated by the oxidizing-agent in order to bring down all the cobalt. Copper and other impurities are also removed. Sodium or potassium manganate, or permanganate, or barium or calcium permangate, may be used. Permanganic acid should be neutralized before or after addition to the impure solution, which must be rendered neutral or slightly alkaline by lime or zinc oxide before or after the addition of the oxidizing-agent. The permanganic acid may be generated electrolytically, preferably in the whole or a part of the solution to be refined. Impurities other than cobalt may first be removed from the crude zinc solution by zinc dust. After deposition of zinc, the liquid may be used for lixiviation.
