Abstract

In a gas valve, initial depression of a knob 11 against a spring 16 allows a spring 20 to seat a first valve member 17 and further depression allows the stem 12 of the knob to unseat a second valve member 8 against a spring 9 thereby allowing flow from an inlet 21 to a pilot burner via passages 13, 14. When the pilot is lit, a thermo-electric member heated thereby energizes an electro-magnet 2 to cause the latter to retain its armature 7 which is coupled to valve member 8. Thus, when knob 11 is released valve member 8 remains unseated and valve member 17 is unseated by spring 16, and gas is allowed to flow to the main burner via port 22. A second knob 28 is provided for disengaging the armature from the magnet and comprises a stem 27 that co-operates with a two-arm lever 23 carried by an angled member 24, one leg of the latter having a hole (31) (Fig. 3, not shown), that receives a boss 6 on cover 5. A slot (32) leads from the hole (31) to the end of said leg to allow the lever 23 and member 24 to be assembled in place over the stem 27. 1,129,628. Springs. P. A wavy spring, made from a slat of steel wire and used e.g. for motor vehicle seats, furniture etc., is characterised in that the pitch and amplitude of the waves of the spring are varied to provide different strengths of the individual spring parts. In a preferred embodiment, as shown, the amplitude b1 is reduced in the part d where the waves also have an increased pitch al. The springs may be of semicircular, saw-tooth, lozenge, or other shape according to their intended use. The spring part with an increased pitch may be formed by stretching that part between the joins (1, 2), Fig. 8 not shown, of a mechanical, hydraulic, or electric, device.
