Abstract
1,128,971. Irradiating coated substrates with electron beams. BERGER, JENSON & NICHOLSON Ltd. 29 June, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 27804/65. Heading C3P. A substrate is coated with a composition whose binder is an uncatalysed mixture of a polyester, which is a linear polymer obtained by polymerizing an α,#-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, and an unsaturated hydrocarbon or ester copolymerizable therewith and the coating is irradiated with a high energy electron beam at an energy level of at least 0À4 MeV. In examples (1) a polyester solution is produced from propylene glycol, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, pentaerythritol and styrene in toluene, compounded with paraffin wax, the solution is applied to wood, paper and hardboard and then irradiated; (2) as (1) using TiO 2 as pigment in the solution; (4) as (1) using additionally diethylene glycol to produce the polyester; (5) a polyester solution is produced from fumaric and succinic acids, ethylene glycol, di-allyl trimethylol propane, styrene and toluene and then irradiated as in (1).
