Abstract
Substrates are finished with a cured air-drying unsaturated polyester film by depositing a liquid film of an air drying unsaturated polyester-monomer mixture containing a photosensitizer on the substrates to be coated, and irradiating said deposited film with flashes of light radiation of at least 50 watt seconds intensity per flash from an electronic gas-filled flash tube, said flash tube emitting photo-chemically active wavelenghts of light radiation, so as to cure said polyester film. The air-drying unsaturated polyester-monomer mixtures employed contain allylic groups. In examples polyesters are prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, diethylene glycol, diallyl pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol and trimethylol-propane monoallyl ether. These are dissolved in styrene and tertiary butyl hydroquinone is added as inhibitor. In further examples coating compositions are prepared from styrene, a solution of silicone oil in styrene, non-drying capric acid alkyd, 1-chloromethyl naphthalene and 2-naphthalene sulphonyl chloride with polyesters and mixtures of polyesters previously prepared. Wooden panels primed with (i) methyl ethyl ketone peroxide in dimethyl phthalate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and a solvent mixture of xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone and ethyl amyl ketone and (ii) vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and a solvent mixture of xylene and methyl isobutyl ketone are coated with these compositions and irradiated after aging at room temperature or heat treatment.
