Abstract

1360688 Curing coatings by ionizing radiation BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 8 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 51711/71 Heading C3P A coating is produced on a substrate by first applying to the substrate to be coated a composition which contains a mixture of olefinically unsaturated organic compounds as components forming a binder and then curing with ionizing radiation, the components forming the binder consisting of a mixture of: (A) from 50 to 98% by weight of at least one at least twice olefinically unsaturated copolymerizable substance with a boiling point of more than 100‹ C.; (B) from 50 to 2% by weight of at least one compound of the formula in which the radicals X and Y are organic radicals, at least one of which contains a copolymerizable C-C double bond and from 2 to twenty carbon atoms; and (C) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one other monoolefinically unsaturated compound which is not identical with the compounds specified under (B); the sum of the percentages given under (A), (B) and (C) being equal to 100. In the examples compositions containing a polyester of fumaric acid and diethylene glycol, maleic acid monoester of 1,4-butanediol monoacrylate, o-phthalic monoester of ethylene glycol monomethacrylate, styrene, a polyester of maleic acid, o-phthalic acid and propylene glycol-1,2, tetrahydrophthalic acid monoester of vinylthioethanol, the adduct of bicyclo-octenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and ethylene glycol monomethacrylate, p-phthalic acid ester of vinylthioethanol, tetrahydrophthalic monoester of butanediol-1,4- monoacrylate, a polyester of maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol-1,2, a polyester of maleic anhydride, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and propylene glycol, maleic acid monoester of triethylene glycol diacrylate, hydroquinone, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 1,4-butanediol diacrylate, divinylbenzene, the monoester of succinic acid with diethylene glycol monomethacrylate and butyl methacrylate are applied to sheet metal and sheet iron and cured using electrons.
