Abstract
1,128,609. Silicon steel; coating with silicon. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORP. Dec. 30, 1965 [Dec. 31, 1964], No.55309/65. Headings C7A, C7D and C7F. Silicon steel containing more than 4% Si is produced by depositing silicon at a temperature between 1900‹ F and 2300‹ F and a mean delivery rate between 0.0075 x 10<SP>-3</SP> and 7.5 x 10<SP>-3</SP>gm/cm<SP>2</SP> / min on to finish gauge silicon steel containing less than 4% Si and homogenizing the coated steel e. g. at 1900-2300‹ F. The steel is preferably coated with silicon by passing it through a furnace having an argon atmosphere which contains 0.01- 23% A saturated with SiCl 4 maintained at a temperature of 78‹ F. Other silicon compounds such as silane, trichlorosilane &c. can be used. After coating, and before homogenisation, the steel may be stress relief annealed e. g. at 1475‹ F. for two minutes and after homogenisation it may be annealed in a magnetic field.
