Abstract
112,842. Ward, T. W., and Lash, H. W. Feb. 17. 1917. Breaking; expanding and stretching; shearing; shear-blades.-Light scrap metal which is to be compressed and bundled in machines such as are described in Specifications 23633/94, 1598/11, and 6827/13 is cut and torn in apparatus comprising three or more pairs of toothed or fluted rollers a, a<1>, b, b<1>, c, c<1> and a rotary cutter d which coacts with a fixed cutter e. In one form, the rollers a, a<1> have longitudinal and circumferential V-grooves, the second pair b, b<1> which are of larger diameter and higher peripheral speed than the first pair, and, therefore, tear the metal between the pairs of rollers, have longitudinal V- grooves, and the third pair c, c<1>, which are of larger diameter and higher peripheral speed than the second pair, have also longitudinal V-grooves of smaller pitch than the second pair. The cutter d has helical cutting edges with recesses between them. The material is guided through the machine by plates g, g<1>, g<2>. The rolls are driven by gearwheels.
