Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; draining.-Water to cool the piston or other moving part of an internal-combustion engine circulates through a pipe A from or to the vessel C. To prevent water leaking into the crank casing, the pipe A passes through a sealing chamber D to which oil or grease under pressure is supplied by a pipe d. Water leaking through the stuffing-box C' is led away by a pipe F, any surplus passing into a receiver f, provided with a drain pipe F<1>. Oil and water passing into the chamber g is led away by a pipe G and the two are separated in any ordinary way.
